# **How to Add Subscriptions to Your Shopify Store in South Africa**

Customers don’t buy products like coffee beans, vitamins, supplements or pet food just once. They use them, run out, and come back for more. If you’re selling a product people naturally buy on repeat, giving customers the option to subscribe can turn those repeat purchases into recurring revenue.

And if your store is already running on Shopify, you don’t need to rebuild the way you sell to get started.

##
**Turning a Shopify product into a subscription**

NjiaPay has partnered with [PureSubs](https://www.purecommerce.co.za/pages/pure-subscription), a Shopify subscription app built to enable subscription payments for Shopify merchants in South Africa.

PureSubs handles the subscription experience within Shopify, giving customers the option to subscribe to eligible products rather than purchasing them as a once-off.

And the impact is already showing great results. After only 3 months, early adopters have seen subscriptions account for** 9.5% of all sales** – creating a growing base of predictable, recurring revenue.

The customer makes their initial payment and, with their permission, their payment credentials can be securely stored for future payments. From there, future payments can be initiated according to the agreed subscription schedule.

That means a product you already sell can become a weekly, monthly or recurring purchase.

## **Where subscriptions make sense**

Not every product needs a subscription option.

But if the same customers are buying the same products regularly, it’s worth asking whether you could make it easier for them to keep coming back.

Think about a customer who orders the same bag of coffee every month. They have to remember they’re running low, return to your store, find the product, add it to their cart and pay again.

A subscription gives them another option: set it up once and let the purchase happen according to the agreed schedule.

For the customer, it’s a matter of convenience; for the business, it creates a more predictable way to capture repeat purchases that are already happening.

##
**What happens when it's time to pay again?**

A subscription isn't simply a recurring order. Each renewal *still needs to become a successful payment.*

The good news is that offering subscriptions through NjiaPay gives every recurring payment the best possible chance of succeeding. Our specialised payment orchestration features continuously optimise how payments are processed.

That could mean sending a payment through the best route, or intelligently retrying a failed payment at a time when it has a better chance of going through. And you don’t need to replace your existing payment provider to do it.

NjiaPay sits as an orchestration layer between your Shopify store. Together with PureSubs, we bridge the gap between offering a subscription through your Shopify store and collecting the recurring payments behind it.

When a customer first subscribes, their payment credentials are securely stored in NjiaPay’s PCI Level 1, provider-agnostic vault. This means they can be used for future payments across the providers you use today, or any you choose to add tomorrow.

When their next payment is due, NjiaPay initiates the payment without requiring the customer to return to checkout and pay manually each time.

###
We’re built to improve payment performance, and often describe ourselves as a control tower for your payments.

Think of each payment as a plane coming in to land, and each payment provider as a runway. If you rely on a single provider, every payment has one route to its destination. If that route is unavailable or underperforming, there’s nowhere else for the payment to go.

NjiaPay acts as the control tower. With multiple providers connected, we can direct payments to the route most likely to succeed, and reroute them when conditions change.

The complexity is managed in the background, while your customer simply experiences the payment.

And when a subscription payment does fail, that doesn't necessarily mean the revenue is lost. We can work with you to develop a dunning strategy based on how and when your customers pay – looking at factors such as the reason for the failure, Issuing bank, payment method, provider, timing and date, to determine when and how a payment should be retried.

The result is a subscription setup that doesn't just initiate recurring payments, but actively works to improve the likelihood of collecting them successfully.

##
**Could subscriptions work for your business?**

If your customers are already coming back to buy the same products, there could be an opportunity to turn more of those repeat purchases into recurring revenue.

NjiaPay can help you understand what subscriptions could look like for your Shopify store, get set up with PureSubs, and make sure the payments behind them are optimised for success.
